Battle Studies by John Mayer

I quickly filled up my player, went to my room, grabbed my audiophile earphones , made myself comfortable, made sure I got the L-R right, then relaxed and pressed play.

Battle Studies has begun.

Flashback to June when John himself announced the new album title and the start of a journey he openly shared to all his fans through tweets and blogs, videos and everything. Thus like me, the self proclaimed #1 fan in my city started anticipation and making intelligent guesses as to what this new album has to give.

When the movie-ish intro of Heartbreak Warfare started, it was not new to the ear as expected. John has plugged this out to the public prior release. He even released an augment reality video to give touch to fans with the latest webcam flash technology or so. The song's solo is saved this song from losing the battle. I first heard this from a live acoustic set by John on the Mayercraft. People have dubbed it the "Jennifer Aniston" break-up song and whatever TMZ. I didn't care, cause all I could worry is the plain mediocre lyrics that somehow is an understatement of what John could do and has done in the past. I never expected this to be part of a studio album. But it did, and first track even. Hmmmm.

Let's move to the next chapter. This one kinda sets the tone of the album considering Heartbreak Warfare was widely heard already. It would say, "Yes avid fan, this is what battles studies and the rest of the album will be more about". True to the sense of having a heartbreak album. Chorus has a nice sad touch to it, left me singing right after the first one. Its easy to like. Simple but deep.

Honestly going to track 3, I was still convinced that this isn't going to be a good JM album based on my predictions. And what better to justify my claim was Half of my Heart with Taylor Swift. that pop alternative catchy tune that would expectantly have usual love song DNA to it. The Jonas Brothers would be happy and would think they are doing it right.

And what more by adding fuel to the fire with 'Who Says'. This song, i had no idea why this is in the heartbreak album or why even John wrote this. Have they been friends with Kanye too long or have gone too close. I have nothing more to say to it I'm sorry. It's not even worth it to think about it. What is that your saying? there is a video? I think I have intentionally and permanently deleted it in my human memory.

Perfectly Lonely showed a sign of good to this material. It had this upbeat basic rhythm with that tingy tele sound chopped in slabs and coupled with overall pop blues side licks. It has that powerful bridge that shows a variety of that husky pop prince voice that John has. It opens up going to the solo that is short and worthy. You know its a John Mayer solo because it sings to you like you understand what it is saying or sounding. His Fender axes are like his duet singers of some sort.

After the lonely fade, these Japanese inspired bamboo sounds come in. Assassin. From an early observatory standpoint, its that red fender 4 string bass being gamed on by Mr. Palladino. It is in this song, not even on the Try! album, that i had an awe for this guys talent. Please listen to it and concentrate on Pino, you'd want to hear it again. But aside from that, this is the first song in the album or rather is the only song that can be awarded with the Continuum Degree of Great Songs from John Mayer University. I know that song award title was full of corny WTH stuff but mind you this song isn't. It also tells the story of how an self proclaimed heartbreaker has found her match and had reacted with everything to late. Broken Mr. Heartbreaker.

From the title itself, its impossible you would think John would ever make an original song on a very popular title. Its the 'Bold As Love' cover song for battle studies. Crossroads has been reinvented, Mayerized (what he usually does on his covers) and as usual goes away with it. This 1930's song just got a flavor of the 2000's. Robert Johnson would be happy, I'm sure he is. Probably John has made a point that although he is dubbed as the "Slowhand Jr." which is already a huge compliment, is that he has something truly his own, to rediscover and reinvent like the legendary Clapton himself and other notable greats.

From this moment on, confidence is back. Everything is now calmer. Listening to War of my Life makes me damn sad and yet hopeful. I love the low volume guitar plucks on this one and the simplicity of drum beats as if playing with the audience is sleeping and dreaming on their own struggles and pains. Its like a pop psychiatric audio tape that your therapist would recommend to you, its just that your therapist is the Pop prince, new blues god John Mayer. The studies of heartbreak has now almost culminated. Dry that tear and let's move on.

In Edge of Desire, that sad aura still resides. But the dim mood is fought back by that complex guitar plucking rhythm with clear broken arpeggios ringing from pickups. Beautiful. This song crystallizes the clarity of feelings for someone that you'd imagine singing this song while just even saying out in the open. Love is crazy beautiful, and so is the belief of yearning for it and the man made songs to come with it. This song is one of em, this is how love should be depicted in songs. You can't even describe the desire but you can surely sing it. I wont forget to mention the amazingly short and perfect guitar solo on this one. You also have to get a copy of the acoustic version of this, recorded by John in his apartment as appreciation to all of us.

I can't quite remember the rest of this song sounds like except for the title line in the chorus. I was not able to pay attention too much as I was running back and forth, replaying the earlier great tracks. It has that similar guitar pattern with Edge of Desire, but the message on Do You Know Me is dreamy. Bloomed picture of vivid colors of that girl in your head, that you seem to have shared precious moments but simply can't utter or recall who she was. Seems like a pitch from a movie set in central park new york. It lasts only 2 mins but the mystery of that person grabs you at the right exact moment.

Last track is Friends, Lovers or Nothing. Song title probably states it all. This is probably the new undying theme song for all best friend relationships on earth. Or for those confused and baffled. It is accompanied with keyboards and John riffs out slow licks to spice up the confused. John has everything right on this one, many will connect, many will realize, because of this song, you will then have to take notice. Even if non-Mayer fans would love this when they come across it. It's real, straight to the point, no mambo-jumbo. Say it love, "just give it up.....". The Coda on this song damn nearly killed me. Maybe it did. I wanted to shout out in the highest voice and sing it....and close it with a lick only John can make. Thank you John.

To conclude, i should lay it out simply. Its mediocre. Its not great. Some tracks made me think John was high on e and and that he was hanging out with the Jonas Brothers or being brainwashed by Kanye while wearing that striped shades of his. But it brings me to a point that some tracks are damn neat. It absolutely killed me on those. I'd then say this is the worst John Mayer ever done on all four. He was absolutely right not compare it with Continuum....he has confessed it already early on. But why is it that I keep on listening and why you should keep it playing if its the worst? Because it is way way better that what else is out there. And it being un-great makes it an underdog that redefines a character you yourself will love and yearn for it years to come. Weird but true.

End of class.

Real Entertainment on the Tube

We have all had our daily addiction of TV series from different networks and all. From the ever popular Friends that jumpstarted the careers of some, 90210 for the party teenage people, Baywatch for the primarily reason of that red bikini on Erika Eleniak and Pamela Anderson accompanied by the hairy chested David Hasselhoff. The list goes on and on. Though I am not such a big fan of these. I would only take note of a few that has made me a fan and would frantically wait for the next release or so just reviewing back the previous ones when its still off season.

Top Gear. This long running show from UK which started out as just a regular series featuring the newest and hippest cars all over the world. From top to low gear, they would treat every car as if it was equal. No political biased based on brand, just plain and simple critique that could raise the biggest ear on any automotive CEO. And when it came to have the most popular Car show hosts to ever grace the planet, Clarkson, Hammond and May, made this show a pure classic. Not only does this show get you up to date what new cars are in or out, they practically provide a high budget, comedic kick-ass show that even the ladies without the slightest knowledge on cars would enjoy. These trio cannot be duplicated, they made this show up to the 6th gear.

Coupling. Another show from the Brits, is more of a upfront series compared to Friends. It has the same formula, 3 guys and 3 gals, all friends, sleeping in pairs and all with work and all other things in life comedic. But they pull out stuff Friends can't. From dildos, breast flashing, to tripods, to gigaloops, to threesomes and even include pregnancies and the alien related jokes.

Then there's Entourage. The life of a movies star. All the fun, sex, scandals and leisures of life behind the screen. For 6 seasons, Vince, Drama, E, Turtle and don't forget the award winning Ari Gold have constantly brought about a version of sex in city for guys. The slang, fashion, attitude, importance and objective that would clearly target the physically stronger sex. I would not know how long will the boys be coming back for another season, but I wouldn't mind still having them around for updates on the coolness through entertainment.

Lastly, an unexpected guy hero in a form of a writer? Yes from a writer, not from a flying super hero nor from an unbeatable gadgety spy. That's David Duchovny dawing the suit of Hank Moody for Californication. With constant titty exposure in like 8 out of 10 episodes, with notions from the usual sex, drugs and rock and roll with a touch of love, parenting and downright genius of a life of a one hit wonder writer. But this show is no one hit wonder. Running at it's 3rd season now, it still has fresh ladies brought up to the scene, from Mia to Jackie. With everybodies best friend in Charlie Roncol. That soulmate Karen. Sounds so real. Maybe thats what makes this show a hit. Every guy is watching Hank Moody living the real life and living the dream (all the ladies hes scored and still be cool about it).

311 - Uplifter

The boys from Omaha gets back after a couple of tours and out from a studio and gave us Uplifter last June. And I, this late 20's writer remember the first day I saw these guys on MTV. With their song 'Down' way back in 1995. There flavor was new and way cool. It was news flash at school with band mates that we had to cover. All you need is someone who can sing like Count SA. But now with a bunch of emo bands flowering up all what used to be hard solid rocks isn't too much blending in. I mean on the radio perhaps. Or some slasher's ipod playlist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt-nBwJR3KA

Can they really still make money with this music? Does it still have an audience? When blokes like me have gone out of our bedrooms and garages to make our own buck at blunt grey offices? I listened to it and gave it patience. First couple of songs where kinda or exactly what you'd expect from 311. Ska-ish grungy yet joyful fast guitar riffs with down flava. That tiny voice from Count SA's mic with Nick's calm voice. Chad's spring up snare. 311 mix is still there after almost two decades. Longetivity is key in music too I say. A couple of tracks are okay. You can have it as background 90's music in your pad, car or wherever. 'It's Alright' is the first to give you that uplifting feel that you miss in much of todays rock bands (are there any still?). Has that beach reggae feel telling you it's alright wherever and whenever. Amazing bass part after a minute. 'Too much too fast' aaaah this is the one. I'd this is the best in the album. Let's me think Drew Barrymore and me as the eggheaded Adam Sandler. No this is not the first dates but the riffs, tune, mix, blend and composition overall is neat. Not a masterpiece though but I'd assure you'll hit that replay button many more times. You know when you wish that it would not end playing, the neverending track till you arrive home. So much love for music, and they have so much to give. 'Two Drops in the Ocean' 's intro is kinda that kiss me riff haha, but this track is also neat. Tim has effects those strings with a wah that is purely his modern signature. 'My Heart Sings' tones that hip pace with acoustic alternative genre.

UPLIFTER

This album is a fair or B+ in my books. Its a keeper in my DB. 311 don't have to call 911 yet. They still have something to offer. Who knows, as i've said, longetivity is key, stick to what you are. What you know and yeah yeah what you believe as thousands have expressed. Nuff cliche's, listen to it.

Then again, these are just my thoughts.

U2 - No Line on the Horizon

11 tracks, from legends on every music fan you have ever talked to. These Irish men have in it a tie that will defeat other chains that bind everything. Even an atomic bomb could not dismantle they're hunger to shout and produce astounding tunes. "No line on the Horizon" there 12th album, released about two months ago, with all talked about rave, critique, leaks and what else, pressure is on. But after these have passed, millions have listened, i now lately say my stake.

I did not, or musically was not expecting that they go this road. A road were musicians push to scratch the itch, fill the hole. But is there a hole, is there an annoying itch?

"Get on yout boots" is the first release both on video and airwaves. My eyebrows quickly raised up upon hearing this song first, this style of beat and rythm that U2 has under its talent is not something thats gonna work for my taste. 2nd to Discotheque.

"Maginificent" is the 2nd release. This the star of this album. It has the DNA that makes U2 such legends. Everything's right in this, that rock sunrise feel of an intro, lovely lyrics, superb guitar 4 broken to minor guitar techno riffs , and that 16-beat drum sequence. Magnifico!

"Moment of Surrender". THis has that 90's kinda wave feel of a beat and bass lines. I grew up musically in the 90's, naturally this was my first pick. That solo moment by Edge is pure and hell out superb.

"Breathe". Hah, Bono does need to breath hard singing this song, wait, he is Bono. He has this smooth breathless voice that seem tired but can go every mile of the beat and tone.

I have full respect of the band from Dublin. I must never question their music, yet quesiton my own capacity to appreciate. There is still many to explore on this horizon with no boundaries. Need more time. Need to digest. Look back maybe and graduate the doubting of such gift from the quartet. I need to....i guess you have too.

Homage slash Rip-offs

I was urged to write this thought upon a chance topic on a watch forum on homages or rip-offs. Totally surprised on the level of design copies these brands do, sacrificing probably their dignity and character just to get heads above water from the competition. But do they really survive? Guess this defines how dumb or smart you are....

Invicta rip-off of Citizen/Seiko

Invicta's 5747 Force Flight and the Citizen Eco-Drive Nighthawk

The most obvious copy of all. Even a WIS like me would look twice to verify. The dual time hands makes the clear distinction with that aero design.

Invicta 2615 Pro Diver and the Seiko SKX781 Orange Monster

The dial colors, Monster like indices and bezel edges will tell you that you bought the wrong Invicta. Good thing those arrow hands were not applied, the hands on that Invicta look horrible. And the no shroud design just makes it a little monster with no muscle.

Invicta Pro Diver and Timex T29781 now takes on Rolex Submariner

I bet your eyes are rolling over like playing a game of spot the difference. But to be fair, the Timex and the Invicta have their share of markets due to the massive price difference. Quality surely pays a lot of gap, but the two will surely hold up to any beating. But back to my case, would you really buy an original brand with a fake design? Expeditions and Ironmans are a better bet.

Timex T22232 inspired by Tag Heuer Monaco

Well yes they have lots of differences, but surely the designer from Timex was probably watching Le Mans or scrambling through magazines with TH ads when he sketched out this design the next day. Both are good on their own levels of class.

I have personally lost respect for Invictas, good thing I never bought one. Timex, almost but not yet, they're there so that the masses can have a respectable one too. I do hope this list won't be added.

Seiko SKX007 Diver's Watch

After a decade into production, the 007 is still sought after and one for the most admired models of the ever popular and iconic Seiko Diver's watch line. Specifics are....

Case
Molded from the 7002 line, in a neatly brushed stainless steel with screw down case back. The ever popular Japanese 'wave' art paint engraved on the back reassures this Seiko of diver's standard approval. Screw down crown, hardlex crystal and 200 meter depth rating completes the set-up.

Movement
This calibre needs no introduction, bulletproof 7S26 powers this icon.

Dial
In dark grey tone with circular round minute markers - by which made this diver ever so popular. The round markers are coated with lumibrite for effective visibility during lights out. Day/date is at 3 o'clock with Sat and Sun in blue and red respectively.

Hands
No need to say but the traditional hour and minute hands never die down in style. Simple, classic and would fit into any dial design in my opinion and taste. Second hand is quite new as introduced 10 years ago, specifically that the lumed ball end is now on the opposite side while front end is that long thin white painted pointer.

Bezel
Rotates in uni-direction in 120 clicks. Triangular marker at 60 has a lumed ball as with other divers. Bezel in black while pepsi colored for 009 model.

Strap
This came in Z-22 rubber strap, hard and uncomfortable on first try, but we like it that way, tough as the watch itself.

Accuracy
This came +20 sec/day fast out of the box. Not that desirable but regulation is always an option. Possible improvement on that after a few months of wear.

Value
Got this for about $140. More that worth it I defend.

Conclusion
This may be not a high-end luxury item, but no watch collector misses out on this to buddy with the MM, Sumo, or even the R and O's. And I haven't seen any watch brand nor any watch model that has been popular and much in demand for such a long time. Imagine a Volkswagen bug running in production and showing up in stores for a decade in these millennium times. If you see this baby on display, grab it, be part of the iconic horological experience.

Seiko 5 Sports SNZE97K

Sporty look in a mix of class and modern divers style for casual dress-up that gives the right character and feel.

Case
Made with stainless steel in a design of modern diver's with a shroud to protect the bezel and crown. Case back is screw down type with see-through crystal. Still pressure equivalent of 100m depth in water and only suited as far as casual swimming. Hardlex crystal completes the set-up upfront. Case measures 44mm with 2mm for the non-screw down crown.

Dial
This model has the two-toned gray/black dial with rectangular stick-on limed indices for the hour markers. Chapter ring is quite in a common look with other Seiko's.

Bezel
Coated in black PVD. Unidirectional bezel with 120 clicks. Quarter markers with diving guide markers up to 20th min.

Hands
Hour and minute hands from the Seiko's Diver's still, with second hand following the SKX models with the lumed ball-end at the back-end.

Movement
Seiko's 7S36 calibre powers this piece. The 'B' version in exact derived from the much celebrated 7S26 which dubbed as still an equivalent. Self winding movement with no hacking nor hand winding function. 21,600 bph, has 23 jewels to fight wear and tear, simple non decorated rotors and movement parts. Power reserve is 36 hours.

Bracelet
Stainless steel in oyster style with solid links. Deployment clasp with two push buttons lock. Fits firmly at lugs of 22mm.

Accuracy
Entry level movements from Seiko have been observed to be +/- 15 to 40 sec/day but this unit I had performed -8 secs/day out of the box.

Value
Price at $110-115 depending on the retailer.

For the price, design and quality that embodies this watch, definitely a must grab. Unassuming and purely a simple yet unique work of art. Fits nice into any naked wrist and definitely to stay strapped for many many many more years.
